Below -- the Tioga
Building. Jim mentioned this building to me a couple of years
ago. It's a block off of Shattuck, as well as from the
high school. I took the photo from the car, after picking
up James at a concert. A couple of years ago I told Jim I
would take a picture of it. I'm late. Interesting
construction technique involving jacking up the poured floors,
if I remember correctly. It's been recently retrofitted.
LEED certification, which means it's very energy
efficient. That's probably pretty expensive glass.
Not all glass is the same. Most commercial buildings in
our local do not have an issue with heating. They expend
more energy cooling the building. Not that I know much,
but these enormous concrete cantilevers -- which may cover the
entire square footage (Jm could explain) -- no doubt
do an excellent job of radiating heat to the exterior. I
would not want to be in the building when the 8.0 hits. Probably
not in any building, for that matter. It looks better in winter, when the
trees don't have leaves. In the leafy seasons it feels a
bit cramped.
