The 17 subs built at Mare Island between '56 and '70 were built in dry docks under the gantries in the background -- to the right. And I think the USS California, the only battleship built on the west coast was built there, too. See links at the bottom for historical photos.

Bow view of USS Charleston (C 2) in dry dock #1 at Mare Island in April 1898. (The Charleston took part in the Spanish American War - including the blockade of Manila. It foundered on an uncharted reef in the Phillipines in 1899, and that was the end of her.)

USS California, 1921. Bev was really enamoured with the buildings behind on the right. They have beautiful paladian windows. Superb design and brickwork.
