Carlos was back at the hotel resting for the race.  We had a few hours in the morning to go to Carmel.  Parked on the main street with all the little stores, and with Julian in the stroller descended to Scenic Drive which wraps around the coast going south.  Hit the beach along the way.  Lots of people out walking, which we learned from the last trip.  Nice people.  Safe.  Good walk, but the poverty is heart wrenching.  Directly behind us, a little bit to the left, is the Clinton Walker House.  I looked at it, and my memory is so bad... I kind of recognized it...but all I could think...and I said this to my wife...what a beautiful design. Perfect.  Didn't realize it until we came home and I googled the homes.  It's a Frank Lloyd Wright house.  1948.  Very famous, and I remember.. in my bad memory seeing photos in the book mom gave me when I was 14.  In the link below, the blogger says it's little known.  That's not true.  Another quarter mile down there are three homes, also on rock between the road and the sea. The first one is known as the Butterfly House (1952), probably based on the roof.  It's been refurbished the last couple of years and is on the market for $19.5M.  Think of the beating it takes, purched on the rocks.  I think it's a reasonable price.  3,000 sq ft.  Pool in the middle. The second and third are in the Carmel style.  Sand stone.  Maybe the same period, or earlier.  Both gems. I watched the matron of the third gardening on the south side, tossing weeds into the rocks and water below.  Wish we had had more time to walk inland, on the south side, to the mission.

D.L. James house.  By Greene and Greene, of Pasadena. A few miles down the road.  Wealthy KC merchant: china, crystal and silver retailer circa 1918.  :http://www.google.com/search?q=D.L.+James+House&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=svW&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&prmd=ivnsm&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=9BelTZikOY2osAOVh9X5DA&sqi=2&ved=0CC0QsAQ&biw=1024&bih=623

Julian not crying here.  The dog and Julian played toss the ball and fetch many times as the dogs owner watched from a distance.  Good fun had by all.
