Carlos, James and I left around 6:30 on Saturday, May 29th? for an early summer trip in the Sierras. I have little experience in the early season up. I was just hoping for the best. Angelica couldn't make it because she had to work half the weekend on a big project. About 40 miles before Sonora Pass I stopped at a ranger station for a wilderness permit and they informed us about the "unsettled" weather that had brought snow to the region. They said more was coming and in the worst case we might have to find another highway home if it snowed heavily, forcing the closure of the pass, but the ranger said it was his policy to live dangerously. We forged on. The pass had just opened a few days earlier. It was beautiful, an alpine pass just opened, and spitting snow. We made Leavitt Meadow an hour later, hoisted our packs and plodded on. We hit the lake a few hours later. The altitude is only 7,300, but for us that's thin air. Not long after we arrived the sky darkened , the wind picked up and the snow came in at less than a 45 degree angle. I didn't know what to expect -- if it would continue -- so I was a little concerned. In the end, it was just off and on snow flurries, little accumulation, a cold night alrighty, but we survived. With the three of us in the tent that night, it was like a wet cave in the tent, with all our exhaled moist breath condensing on the tent . Carlos was the first up (dang it was cold) and when he crawled over us and opend the fly,a shower of very chilly water came down on our heads. We took a really fun hike the next day, but without Mom, and not really cherishing the idea of another night like that, and also thinking it would be nice to spend Memorial Day with Mom, we bailed and came back on Sunday.
