Estero Trail -- Point Reyes -- July 2, 2006
We took a hike at Point Reyes today. We took our bikes, hoping to be able to bike all the way from the Estero (Estuary) trailhead to a spot on the coast -- actually on the land side of a big spit -- about 4.5 miles out. At the parking lot the trail looked like a challenge for bikes (confirmed soon after by some mountain bikers) so we walked it. We went a little over 2.5 miles out and returned. It's a large shallow estuary. We were there at low tide and large areas were little islands of mud, a pack of a couple hundred or so seals basking in the sun, and lots of egrets and a heron or two feeding.
I plan to return with kayaks or a canoe. Don't know where you put in. It could be quite a paddle from wherever that might be to the estuary.
